According to Ayurvedic texts, Sleep is caused by increased kapha and Insomnia by increased vata or pitta, which may follow physical or mental exertion, or disease. Lack of sleep decreases body’s efficiency to work. The natural wakeup and sleep cycle are restored with the help of Ayurveda. Causes of sleeplessness include stress, erratic work and habits, some medications, some medical conditions like Asthma, surgery, etc.
Ayurveda believes in the fact that different people can have various reasons for having sleep disorders and thus the methods of treatment will also vary depending on the cause.Some herbs which help in this disorder are Tagara, Shankhpushpi, Jatamansi, Brahmi, etc. If the problem becomes chronic condition some therapies like Shirodhara, Nasya (nasal drops), and Snehan (massage) help alongwith Ayurvedic formulations.
