Lifestyle Diseases

What are Lifestyle Diseases?

Physicians agree that 80% of diseases today are indirectly or otherwise related to wrong lifestyle choices. So, what are lifestyle diseases? Simply put, these are "diseases associated with the way a person or a group lives life" & clearly indicate that certain diseases are a result of bad habits and/ or inappropriate relationship with the surrounding environment.

At their base they include routine issues like indigestion, acidity, loss of appetite, headache, pain in the shoulders, back and neck and lack of s sleep to state a few. Going forward, they also include complicated ones like such as hypertension, obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, alzheimer, dementia, cancer etc..

The latter diseases stated above do not come about suddenly. The body in fact starts giving signals early in form of indigestion, acidity etc. which in most cases we fail to recognise and act upon by making suitable changes in our lives. With time these manifest themselves as complex issues difficult to treat and become life-threatening.

How do they happen? A direct relation exists between physical inactivity & lifestyle diseases.

Eating habits: Foods not consumed on time and/ or consuming wrong kinds of food full of sugar, chocolate, fast food, soft drinks, fried food etc. Potentially dangerous habits like smoking and consuming alcohol.

Stress: Increased stress resulting in secretion of undesirable hormones.

Preventive measures

Ideally the earliest one starts modifying his/her lifestyle the better. The phrase "Prevention Is better than cure" is very true with lifestyle diseases. Hence, by adopting the lifestyle tips mentioned below, you can rest assured that your body would only thank you for taking care of it!

Manage Stress: Reading, meditating & yoga. Also, develop a hobby to manage stress.

Get adequate sleep: To get the body work in complete harmony, sleep at least 8 hours every day. It also helps maintain a sharp mind.

Regular meals: Skipping meals increases intake of food irrespective of nutritional value to satisfying craving. To stay fit do not skip meals ever.

Workout and physical activity: Get into some form of workout at least 5 times a week for a min of 40 minutes. Also walk as much as possible during the day.

Quit smoking and alcohol abuse: Nicotine has safer alternatives today in the form of toffees and candies to satisfy one's cravings & reduce smoking drastically if not completely. Get medical advice before attempting. Same goes for drinking alcohol which should either not be consumed or be consumed in small quantities.

Curative Methods

The best way to treat lifestyle diseases is to drastically change one's lifestyle. Medication comes second. This order gets reversed in chronic cases though lifestyle change does not lose its importance in preventing further complications.
